What is the Archive?

The LEGO FTP archive is an unofficial collection of photographs, text, and even software contributed by various LEGO fans. All these materials can be downloaded by means of the FTP protocol for transfering files between computers. The standard interfaces of FTP programs, however, are not very friendly; you have to know (or guess) which of the files in the archive are the ones you want, based only on brief file names. This Guide is intended to provide better access to the contents of the archive via the World Wide Web.

The archive was originally built by Paul Gyugyi, but at the current time exists only at the site in Austria provided by Brian Ward.

How to Use This Guide

The pages of the Guide contain hyperlinks to most of the files in the FTP archive. Via the World Wide Web, you can navigate around the pages of the Guide until you find the description of a desired file, then select and view (or download) that file in a manner appropriate to your Web browser.

All the original FTP directory structure of the archive is available as well. If, while browsing one of the pages of the Guide, you select a directory (the links to these are typically labeled ``directory'' or ``subdirectory''), you'll encounter the same interface you would get from any other FTP server: a list of file and subdirectory names, and you have to guess which ones you want. Avoid these links if you want to continue to see more complete descriptions of the files you can access. (Sometimes, however, you must select a directory because its files are not described in the Guide, and even if the Guide describes some files, if you want to be absolutely sure you have seen every file, you must check the FTP directory itself.)

Within the Guide, links labeled ``index'' or ``guide'' lead to other hypertext pages describing the FTP archive. Links labeled ``below'' typically lead to other parts of the page you're already reading. Following these links means you will continue to see helpful descriptions of the things you can access.

The organization of the FTP archive and its hypertext versions are neither completely uniform nor entirely consistent with each other (in particular, some files in the archive are not listed in the Guide), so navigate with care.
